About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The Journal of Montessori Research is an online publication that advances knowledge of Montessori education through empirical research studies, critical reviews of the literature, theoretical essays, and scholarly book reviews available in an open access forum. Submissions are invited from diverse disciplines and a range of research paradigms that contribute to scholarship for the Montessori community as well as the broader field of education.

Peer Review Process

The Journal of Montessori Research employs a blind peer review process with at least two referees evaluating each manuscript submitted. Anyone interested in serving as a reviewer should read the Information for Reviewers page.  Reviewers may be members of the publication’s Editorial Board or ad hoc reviewers with specialized knowledge related to the topic at hand. All reviewers possess an advanced degree and demonstrated scholarly history in Montessori or related fields. Manuscripts will be reviewed for the significance of the problem, the quality of the method and argument, and clarity of writing. The goal is to review and respond to submissions within six weeks.

Publication Frequency

The Journal of Montessori Research will be published twice each year with one issue in the fall and one in the spring.

Open Access Policy

The Journal of Montessori Research will utilize the Creative Commons licensing protocols for open access content at the Attribution-NonCommercial (CC BY-NC) level, which allows others to remix, tweak, and build upon work non-commercially, and although all new works must acknowledge the original source and be non-commercial, they do not have to license their derivative works on the same terms.

Publication Ethics Statement

The AMS Research Committee, with input from other active researchers, has developed guidelines to provide an ethical framework for individuals pursuing Montessori-related research. The guidelines were informed by models used by other organizations engaged in research involving children and educators and are aligned with the American Montessori Society’s Code of Ethics. These guidelines will be taken into consideration when reviewing manuscripts for the Journal of Montessori Research. Download the Ethical Guidelines.
