Abstract

This study explores the intersection of film and nationalism in contemporary China by analyzing “Wolf Warrior II”. This high-grossing film ranked 55th globally, is a landmark in China's Main Melody movies, reflecting complex themes of patriotism and nationalism. The research aims to understand Chinese perceptions of the film's values and its depiction of China's international status. Combining questionnaire surveys and in-depth interviews, the study uncovers three key findings: Firstly, Main Melody movies like “Wolf Warrior II” serve a significant political propaganda role, integrating patriotism and heroism into their narrative. These films not only influence moral behaviors and value establishment but also play a crucial role in the development of contemporary Chinese cinema. Secondly, “Wolf Warrior II” embodies a nationalist tone under the guise of patriotism, catering to contemporary Chinese audiences’ desire for a robust national image. Thirdly, the film introduces a new patriotic hero archetype, blending ideology with entertainment effectively.
